EXTENDED SYNOPSIS
In his true mystery thriller style, Ken Follett’s international bestselling masterpiece The Pillars of the Earth interweaves a brutal murder with a sensuous and passionate love story. Set against the exciting and gritty backdrop of war, intrigue and religious strife that tears lives and families apart, this eight-hour event series adaptation is a suspenseful ride of splendid beauty and repulsive evil, of ruthless treachery born of greed and the miracle of the human spirit.

On a bright, cloudless day, a lone ship in the English Channel mysteriously sinks - seemingly without cause. Amongst the ship’s lost souls is the future King of England and his young pregnant bride. The only survivor of this fiery catastrophe is the young French artist, Shareburg, who washes ashore more dead than alive, clutching in his fist the red ruby ring once worn by the drowned Prince.

While gathering mussels on the beach for her convent, Ellen, a beautiful, willful and strangely exotic young novice, finds the unconscious Shareburg and secretly nurses the handsome foreigner back to health. Their language barrier cannot stop their strong attraction to each other and Ellen’s growing love for him just kindles her renegade feelings towards the nunnery and confirms that she will never take her final vows.

Ecstatically happy together, Ellen bares Shareburg a son – Jack. Their idyllic family life is short-lived, however. For no apparent reason, Shareburg is accused of a bogus crime, taken prisoner and condemned to death. The execution is so violent and heinous that it creates an indelible imprint on both Ellen and Jack for the rest of their lives.

Before escaping the public square with Jack, Ellen places a curse on the three powerful men who have accused her lover of a crime he did not commit. She knows that whatever reason these men had for snuffing out an innocent man’s life is important enough to them to make her and Jack their next target. Now an outlaw herself, Ellen must live outside of society – an outcast, who is perceived to reside in the dark, foreboding world of witchcraft.

Seventeen years later, we meet Percy and Regan Hamleigh and their son William. A family of lesser nobility, they are ambitiously trying to raise their social status by marrying William off to the beautiful and intensely intelligent daughter of Bartholomew, the Earl of Shiring – Aliena. Regan, a beautiful cold Countess with a disfiguring birthmark on her face, is obsessed with pushing her family, and especially her beloved son, up the social ladder. She will stop at nothing to achieve this goal. Despite William’s extreme good looks, Aliena is repulsed by his overt physical sexual advances and has no other recourse but to free herself from him. She rejects William publically which humiliates and embitters him while providing amusement to the entire court.

Spurned and embarrassed by Aliena’s rejection, William vows that he will some day possess her. He plans first to take down her entire family, stripping them of their position in society and humiliating them to the point that she will beg for his mercy and regret the day she rejected him.

William immediately dismisses his master mason, Tom, whom he had hired to build his bridal home, sending Tom and his family, including his eight- month pregnant wife, Agnes, off into the winter without pay or hope of new work. Their only chance of surviving the winter is a pig that will be their sole source of food. Deep into the woods, they are attacked by a thief who bludgeons Tom’s young daughter, Martha, leaving her bloody and unconscious. The attacker runs off with the pig and with Tom and Agnes’ hope of survival.

Suddenly Ellen and Jack (now wearing Shareburg’s ruby ring) appear and bring the desperate family to the cozy shelter of their cave. Alfred, Tom’s son, witnesses Ellen mixing potions in the night and tells his mother of her obvious witchery. Ellen tries to explain that she is preparing medicine for the injured child, but Agnes will have none of it and insists upon leaving this place of evil immediately. In doing so, a fatal decision is made as Agnes goes into early labor in the middle of the cold, wintery woods. Tom is left with no other alternative, but to leave Agnes alone with Alfred and Martha and find his way back to Ellen’s cave for help.

Alfred must aid his mother as she gives birth to a baby boy. By the time Tom returns with Ellen and Jack, Agnes has lost far too much blood to survive. Her dying words to Tom are that he must go off and realize his lifelong dream of building the most beautiful cathedral in the land.
Dazed by the loss of his wife, Tom allows Ellen to lead him and the children back to the safety and warmth of her cave.

Tom soon becomes restless to move on and find work, but more importantly to follow his dream – a vision to build a cathedral - a new kind of cathedral - a structure that will reach upward to Heaven and “let in the light.” Ellen, having developed feelings for Tom, resolves to leave the cave and set off with him and his children.

In time, Tom starts to reciprocate Ellen’s feeling for him and eventually falls in love with her. They are able to give back to one another the passion and compassion that each had lost with their first loves. Tom hopes to rebuild a family for himself and his children, but Alfred blames Ellen for his mother’s death and grows resentful of his father for being able to move on, when he cannot. The easiest target for his hurt and resentment becomes the younger Jack.

Tom finds work at Shiring Castle and he enlists the help of his extended family as he repairs the castle’s ramparts. At that fateful moment, Jack catches his first glimpse of a vision that will sustain him for his entire life – Aliena. Neither Jack nor Aliena can look anywhere but at each other. The bond between them is instantaneous. Shortly after their arrival, the castle is attacked by William, who is keeping to his vow to bring Aliena and her family down. Her father, the Earl of Shiring is accused of plotting against King Stephen, who had conspired with the Church to crown him instead of the rightful heir to the throne. Aliena’s father is hauled off to the dungeons to be tortured and killed, while she and her younger brother are forced into hiding. For Tom, this means his family is once again without work or food. For William’s father Percy this could mean taking over the Earldom of Shiring, which he feels King Stephen owes him.

William returns to the Castle with his personal guard, finding Aliena and her brother in hiding. Aliena is brutally raped, but they manage to escape with their lives. Giving away the last money they have in order to gain an audience with their father before his execution, Aliena takes a solemn vow to help her younger brother regain his rightful place as Earl of Shiring.

Tom’s path leads him to the Priory of Kingsbridge, where he befriends the newly elected Prior Philip, and offers to restore the crumbling church in exchange for food and shelter for his family. Shortly after their arrival, the church mysteriously burns to the ground, creating the perfect vacuum where a magnificent cathedral would grow. Tom finally finds the job of his dreams.

Philip has an enemy within the walls of the priory, Sub-Prior Remigius, who thought he had secured the position of Prior until Philip’s sudden reappearance won him a landslide vote. Remigius now watches Philip’s every move, hoping for the chance to trip him up.

Philip needs resources to build the cathedral, and has no other choice but to reach out to the very man who duped him into supporting his election to Bishop in exchange for this man’s help in Philip’s pursuit to become Prior – the Bishop Waleran Bigod. Waleran uses the opportunity to coerce Remigius into being his spy against Philip in the priory.

Waleran has a brilliant idea: he will take Philip to King Stephen to plea a case to gain for the Diocese the Earldom of Shiring, which is not only rich in forests for timber, but boasts an ample quarry for stone – everything Philip will need for building his and Tom’s dream. Waleran is confident that King Stephen owes him this favor and for this reason is outraged to find that Percy and Regan have beaten him to the punch. The King is torn between which of his debts to pay back first and pushes the decision off.

Regan grabs Philip to the side and points out that Waleran’s petition was for the Diocese and not the Priory of Kingsbridge to gain the Earldom – Waleran has no intention that the natural resources of Shiring be used to build Philip’s cathedral, but instead to build a Bishop’s palace for himself. Philip, finding himself once again the butt of Waleran’s Machiavellian joke, joins forces with Regan and Percy, making the King’s decision easy: he should divide the Earldom between the Priory of Kingsbridge and the Family Hamleigh. The King finds the arrangement agreeable.

Philip now has the means to build his cathedral, but has made an enemy of the powerful Bishop Waleran for life.

Upon attending services at Kingsbridge, Waleran and Percy recognize Ellen as the woman who cursed them at Shareburg’s execution. They fear she might know the story of how Shareburg survived the ship disaster that killed the young heir to the throne of England. Regan knows that her husband has become a risk to her obsession to bring her son to the highest level in the nobility and she kills him with a smile on her face. Using information from Alfred, they put Ellen on trial as a witch, but she escapes once again, swearing revenge.

Still running from her abuser, Aliena finds a friend in Prior Philip and a home in Kingsbridge. She also finds Jack again. She is torn, however, by her undying love for him and her oath to her father to dedicate her life to her brother’s quest for justice.

Events unfold in violent and quick succession. Tom is killed in a raid on Kingsbridge by William, leaving Jack to pick up the torch and run with his dream. Aliena must battle the dangers and stumbling blocks of the world in order to avenge her father’s death and secure her love for Jack. Waleran will still stop at nothing to become the head of the Church of England and Regan Hamleigh supports this by killing the Archbishop of Canterbury in cold blood. Her son William needs to become Earl of Shiring. The moment William has gained more power he does not hesitate to kill his own mother Regan, a clear demonstration that he has inherited his mother’s obsession.

However, Ellen who blames Waleran for having lost the two men she loved the most, holds the secret to his murderous past; a secret which enabled Stephen to claim the throne and become the King of England.

A cathedral will be built and a fateful love will not be torn apart.

Mise à jour du blog de Ken Follett, avec une nouvelle vidéo making-of et une description des personnages.
Matthew Macfadyen, who portrays the complex “Prior Philip” with unrelenting strength
Prior Philip is a pragmatic man, who only wants the best for his flock. When confronted by opposition he rises to the occasion and manages to fight against the tyrants who threaten his people by using the power of wit over brute force…a method of fighting that sometimes takes longer, but usually brings long-lasting results and is infinitely more satisfying!

Ridley had just wrapped Robin Hood. The actor who plays the Sheriff of Nottingham in the movie is Matthew Macfadyen, who is Prior Philip in The Pillars of the Earth.
